SMS types

There are two types of SMS: one-way and two-way. In this article, you will learn which type to use in which case.

One-way SMS

Use one-way SMS (A2P SMS) when you need to inform customers of something. These can be SMS campaigns, triggered notifications, two-factor authentication, or any other automatically sent messages.

Coverage

Sending one-way SMS in Voximplant is available for ≈50 countries, but some features and sender ID types may vary by country, same as restrictions on SMS content, sending time, opt-in and opt-out requirements.

Sender ID types

  1. Alphanumeric (e.g. "Voximplant")
  2. Long code (e.g. +1 650 xxx xxxx)
  3. Short code (e.g. 0440)

Pricing

The message text is up to 1600 characters. We split long messages greater than 160 GSM-7 characters or 70 UTF-16 characters into multiple segments. Each segment is charged as one message.

Pricing varies by country, so please visit our pricing page to see one-way SMS availability and rates for a chosen region or contact tech support for more details.

Usage

  1. Contact Voximplant support to enable this functionality. Note that your account must be verified and the purpose of SMS sending must be confirmed.
  2. Register a sender ID in Voximplant if need be.
  3. Start sending SMS.

Two-way SMS

Use two-way SMS (also known as P2P SMS) to exchange personal messages; for example, in chatbots or SMS-enabled contact centers.

Coverage

Sending two-way SMS in Voximplant is available for a few countries by now. We recommend you to use the feature within one country since the international service leaves much to be desired. Please note that the feature is not for automated/triggered messages, sending them can result in blocking.

Pricing

The message text is up to 765 characters. We split long messages greater than 160 GSM-7 characters or 70 UTF-16 characters into multiple segments. Each segment is charged as one message.
